Description of Activity

Participants were gradually and gently eased into movement using music, rhythm, and simple guided prompts. No prior dance experience was required. The session focused on freedom of movement rather than performance, listening to one’s body, and group connection without pressure or expectation. Special care was taken to ensure participants felt safe, respected, and in control throughout the session.

Participants

  • Adults attending the CPFT Recovery Through Activity programme
  • Individuals with lived experience of anxiety
  • Those experiencing emotional distress
  • People with reduced confidence and social withdrawal

Safeguarding & Consent

  • Participation in movement was voluntary
  • Video recordings were taken only from individuals who gave explicit consent
  • Many additional participants engaged fully but were not filmed, respecting privacy and confidentiality

Outcomes & Impact

  • Participants visibly relaxed as the session progressed
  • Increased smiles, laughter, and spontaneous movement were observed
  • Individuals who initially appeared anxious became more confident and engaged
  • Strong verbal feedback highlighting feelings of lightness, joy, connection, and emotional release
  • Several participants expressed how helpful it was to experience recovery in a non-clinical, joyful, body-based way

Feedback Summary

Feedback from both participants and facilitators was overwhelmingly positive:

✓ Reduced anxiety during and after the session

✓ Enjoyment of movement without pressure or judgement

Appreciation for a different approach to recovery
Desire for similar sessions in the future

Reflection

This session reinforced the value of movement-based wellbeing interventions within mental health recovery programmes. It highlighted how dance therapy can complement traditional therapeutic approaches by engaging the body, emotions, and community simultaneously. Free to Be is proud to collaborate with NHS and community partners to support mental wellbeing through creative, inclusive, and human-centred approaches.
